5 key points to a good defensive slide

Sliding in lacrosse is a defensive technique where a defender leaves their assigned player to provide help defense to a teammate who is being beaten. Good sliding technique in lacrosse involves a few key principles, including:

  1. Timing:
Good sliding requires precise timing. The sliding defender needs to recognize when a teammate is beat and initiate the slide at the right moment to help prevent the offensive player from scoring.

  2. Communication:
Communication is essential in sliding. The defender initiating the slide needs to communicate with the teammate they are sliding to, letting them know they are coming to provide help.

  3. Footwork:
Good sliding requires good footwork. The sliding defender needs to take quick, short steps to close the distance to the offensive player, while also maintaining good balance and a low stance to quickly change direction if needed.

  4. Body Position:
The sliding defender needs to approach the offensive player at an angle to force them towards the sideline and away from the center of the field. They also need to stay low and keep their stick up to try to deflect or intercept passes.

  5. Recovery:
After the slide is made, the sliding defender needs to quickly recover to their original defensive assignment. They need to hustle back into position to prevent the offensive player from getting an easy scoring opportunity.

By following these principles, a defender can effectively slide to provide help defense and prevent the opposition from scoring. Coaches should work with their players to develop and practice good sliding technique to ensure they are ready to execute it during a game.
